(36th Eagles player)
A versatile key position player, Murray Rance was a handy veteran presence in the Eagles' sides of the late 1980s and captained the side for a season.
Footscray career[]
Hailing from Esperance, Murray Rance played in three straight premierships for Swan Districts from 1982 to 1984 before being recruited by Footscray for the 1986 season.
A key position player capable of clunking a big mark, Rance played 40 games for the Bulldogs in two seasons before heading home to reunite with his old Swans coach John Todd at the Eagles.
West Coast career[]
Rance played in all but one game in 1988, finished fourth in the best and fairest count and was handed the captaincy after Ross Glendinning retired at the end of the season.
Although Rance had a reasonable 1989, playing 17 games generally at centre-half-back, the team performed poorly in finishing 11th, resulting in coach John Todd being replaced by Mick Malthouse and Rance being replaced as captain by Steve Malaxos.
Rance played 18 games under Malthouse in 1990, but none at all in 1991 as Glen Jakovich and Ashley McIntosh emerged as key defenders. He retired stranded just short of 100 VFL/AFL games.
