Founded in 1859, the Melbourne Football Club is the oldest club in the AFL. It was a foundation member of the Victorian Football League in 1897, and has won 13 premierships including 5 in 6 years between 1955 and 1960. In the interim the club hit dire financial straits and came close to a merger with Hawthorn in 1996, before rectifying things off field, and breaking through for a premiership in 2021 to end a 57-year drought, at the time the longest in the league.
