Former basketballer Matthew Owies joined West Coast from Carlton in 2024.
Carlton career[]
Originally from Melbourne, Owies played junior football for Camberwell but opted to pursue basketball, representing Australia in the under-17s before playing college ball with the University of Hawaii. He returned to football in 2018, signing with Carlton as a Category B rookie. Owies made his debut late in 2020 and played 72 games for the Blues, kicking 89 goals.
West Coast career[]
At the end of the 2024 season, despite playing 23 games and kicking a career-high 33 goals, Owies was invited to look for another club by a Carlton side short on list spots. He agreed to join West Coast and was traded as part of a controversial deal, with the Eagles downgrading from a prized top-three draft pick to obtain Owies and Richmond's Liam Baker.
