(290th Eagles player)
GWS ruckman Matt Flynn joined West Coast in 2023 after limited appearances over eight years with the Giants.
GWS Giants career[]
A former Giants academy prospect from Narrandera, in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Flynn was selected by the Giants in the 2015 national draft (five picks after West Coast selected Tom Cole). He was forced to wait for more than five years to make his AFL debut, having been close in 2019 before injuring his ACL in the reserves. Flynn finally got his chance in the opening round of 2021, and played 33 games over the next three seasons.
West Coast career[]
At the end of the 2023 season Flynn, having lost his spot as lead ruckman midway through the season thanks to the emergence of Kieren Briggs, signed a three-year deal with West Coast as a free agent. Expected to take over duties as first ruck from Bailey Williams, Flynn showed promise in the pre-season before suffering a "unique" injury to his hanstring tendon where it joins the knee. Returning in mid-season, he was rushed into the senior side and played four games before missing more time with a sprained ankle, unable to force his way back into the AFL on his return from that layoff.
