Former first-round draftee Kane Lucas was thrown a lifeline by West Coast in the rookie draft after playing 42 games in five seasons at Carlton, but failed to add to that tally.
Carlton career[]
After playing juniors for East Fremantle, Lucas was in the mix for West Coast's first pick (pick 7) in the 2009 draft. In the end the Eagles went for Brad Sheppard and Lucas went five picks later to Carlton.
Lucas played 42 games for Carlton but struggled to hold down a senior spot under Mick Malthouse and was delisted at the end of the 2014 season.
West Coast career[]
Lucas was then picked by West Coast in the rookie draft. After a solid NAB Challenge he was elevated to the senior list (in place of Eric MacKenzie, who blew out his knee in the pre-season) and travelled to Melbourne as an emergency for the round 1 clash with the Bulldogs. Despite a reasonably prolific season with East Perth and being named in the emergencies a further six times, Lucas was unable to break into the senior side.
That pattern continued in 2016. Lucas was elevated to the senior list early in the season but again failed to win senior selection. The midfielder racked up plenty of touches at East Perth before suffering a knee injury that required season-ending surgery, and announced he was retiring from senior football at the end of the year (although he was doubtful to be kept on the list).
