(22nd Eagles player)
A courageous and versatile player with a distinctive beard, John Gastev was selected in the inaugural West Coast Eagles squad after several solid seasons at West Perth.
West Coast career[]
Gastev kicked three goals on debut against Essendon and played 13 games for the year for a return of 16 goals.
Playing primarily as a tagger, Gastev played 17 games in 1988 and kicked 15 goals, including a 33 possession, 2 goal performance against Essendon early in the season followed by 24 touches and 3 goals against Brisbane the following week. Despite strong form, he left at the end of the season and was snapped up by Brisbane in the pre-season draft.
Brisbane Bears career[]
Gastev won the Bears’ best and fairest in his first season in Queensland, and added another medal in 1992. He retired at the end of the 1994 season after 113 games for Brisbane.
