A talented forward, Spinks was drafted by the Swans at pick 5 in the 1992 national draft (74 picks before cousin Brett went to West Coast), but lasted just two weeks in Sydney before deciding it wasn't for him.

Spinks joined his cousin on West Coast's list in 1995 but was unable to take the field due to chronic knee trouble.
