Hawthorn entered the VFL in 1925, along with Footscray and North Melbourne. After struggling for many years, the Hawks (or the Mayblooms as they were originally known) won their first VFL premiership in 1961. Hawthorn has won a total of 13 premierships, including five between 1983 and 1991 and recent flags in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2015. While primarily based in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, since 2001 Hawthorn has played a number of home games each year in Launceston.
