(286th Eagles player)
Much-hyped Victorian footballer Harley Reid was taken by West Coast with the coveted top pick in the 2023 national draft.
West Coast career[]
Touted as the best prospect in his draft class for months, if not years, before the draft, Reid was the subject of a frenzy of speculation as West Coast finished last in 2023, with certain media outlets clamouring for the Eagles to split pick 1, as they had done with pick 2 the previous year, rather than risk drafting a Victorian. The Eagles declined to do so, and made Reid the first number 1 pick at the club since Michael Gardiner in 1996. On being drafted, he was described as a powerful and explosive midfielder with the ability to push forward.[1]
Instantly an eye-catcher, Reid received a Rising Star nomination for a 27-possession game against Richmond early in the year, following it up with a three-goal effort in the Derby. He finished the season fifth in the side in disposals, third in clearances and fourth in tackles. Unfortunately Reid was ruled out of Rising Star contention when he was suspended for a dangerous tackle, also copping three separate wrestling fines during the year as he objected to being targeted by opposition mids.
