A dependable defender from Claremont, Harding has a solid career at Fremantle before crossing to West Coast at the end of the 2000 season.
Fremantle career[]
Originally from Claremont, Harding made his AFL debut in a derby in 1996, and played 69 games in the purple in five seasons. His best season came in 1997, when he played 18 games and finished in the top 5 in Freo’s best and fairest. After an injury-plagued 2000 season he shifted to the Eagles in a swap for Daniel Metropolis.
West Coast career[]
By the time he arrived at West Coast Harding’s body had just about given up on him. He played just 9 games in the forgettable 2001 season, all of them losses. He didn’t add to that tally in 2002, managing just 7 games for Claremont before requiring an ankle reconstruction.
Perhaps seeing the writing on the wall, Harding announced his retirement from AFL footy at the end of the 2002 season due to his chronic injury problems.
Post-AFL career[]
Harding had a bit of a reversal of fortune after leaving the AFL scene, winning a best and fairest at Claremont in 2003. He was a runner at West Coast for several years before moving into coaching. Harding spent seven years as the senior coach at Swan Districts, after a stint as that club's colts coach.
