West Coast won their second premiership after disposing of Geelong in the decider for the second time in three years, this time shaking off the Cats in the second term and coasting home with an onslaught of goals in the last quarter. The Eagles' domination began in the midfield where Don Pyke (26 possessions) and Norm Smith Medalist Dean Kemp (23 possessions, two goals) controlled play. Fullback Michael Brennan smothered the dangerous Gary Ablett and Tony Evans bobbed up at the other end to kick three goals.

From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"West Coast seized the initiative with three goals in the first 10 minutes and maintained it thereafter, save for a burst of four goals in eight minutes late in the opening term that gave the Cats the lead for the only time in the match.

Geelong looked a dispirited bunch by midway through the last quarter, a term played in almost eerie quiet as the fiercely pro-Geelong crowd digested a truly awesome display by the visitors.

The Eagles' backline was as impregnable as ever, Michael Brennan holding Gary Ablett to one goal, Glen Jakovich a wall at centre half-back, and Guy McKenna a constant source of attack. But West Coast's biggest trump was Norm Smith medallist Dean Kemp, who was superb with 23 possessions and two goals in a ruck-roving role on Geelong captain Mark Bairstow.[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Around the centre, West Coast also had major contributors in ruckman Ryan Turnbull, Don Pyke and winger Peter Matera.

West Coast's back line was at its best again yesterday with top performances from Glenn Jakovich, Ashley McIntosh and Michael Brennan.

Jakovich played well against opponent Bill Brownless, even though the centre-half forward finished with four goals, while McIntosh kept David Mensch to one point only.

Brennan had the difficult task on champion Geelong full-forward Gary Ablett and handled the task brilliantly. He kept his opponent to only three kicks, one mark and one goal."[2]
