West Coast fell well short in their first Grand Final appearance as they were overrun by a vastly more experienced Hawthorn side in the final quarter, with the Hawks piling on eight goals in the period to turn a smallish margin into a blowout. Guy McKenna was his side's best player with 24 possessions in defence, and Brett Heady kicked four goals from 15 touches.

From the papers[]

Canberra Times[]

"Neither side was able to gain any ground during the third term with both teams registering 5.3.

But the hopes of West Coast were quickly dashed when Hawthorn's centre half-forward Dermott Brereton, in his eighth grand final, booted two goals from strong marks in the first three minutes of the term.

Brereton's effort was followed by a Paul Hudson goal one minute later as the Hawks raced to a 29-point lead.

To top. things off, full-forward Jason Dunstall kicked four goals in 13 minutes to give him six for the match and take the game well beyond West Coast's grasp."
