The Fremantle Football Club was established in 1994 as the second AFL team to be based in Western Australia. Known as the "Dockers" (albeit unofficially for a period due to legal threats from a clothing manufacturer which made Docker jeans), the club first competed in the 1995 AFL season. Freo has struggled to find its feet at AFL level, finishing no higher than 12th in its first 8 seasons and taking until 2006 to win a final. The club has had more success of late, playing in its first Grand Final in 2013, but is yet to win a flag.
The two Western Australian sides meet twice each home-and-away season in the "Western Derby". After West Coast won the first 9 Derbies, Freo moved to square the ledger, enjoying a period of dominance including a run of 7 straight wins between 2007 and 2010. West Coast have won the last nine.
The two clubs have never met in a final. The first 46 Derbies were played at Subiaco Oval before WA football moved to Perth Stadium.
The winning club is presented with a trophy and the best player on the ground, as judged by a panel of media representatives, is awarded the Glendinning-Allan Medal, named after inaugural Eagles skipper Ross Glendinning, who also served as Fremantle's chairman of selectors, and the inaugural Fremantle captain Ben Allan
