The Fitzroy Football Club was formed in 1883, and was one of the inaugural members of the Victorian Football League in 1897. The club was one of the most successful in the early days of the VFL and had won seven premierships by 1922, but added only one more premiership (in 1944) over the next 74 years. The Lions struggled on and off field in the 1980s and 1990s and almost merged with Footscray and then North Melbourne, before eventually being forced into a merger with the Brisbane Bears to form the Brisbane Lions in 1996. The Fitzroy club re-emerged in 2009 as a member of the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
