West Coast overcame an early scare to defeat Carlton, winning their sixth straight game in the truncated 2020 season. Carlton stunned the home side with four unanswered goals either side of half-time and led by 19 points in the third term before the Eagles sprung into gear, kicking the last five goals of that quarter to put the match beyond the Blues. Dom Sheed continued some strong personal form with 26 possessions, nine clearances and two final-term goals, while Liam Duggan had 16 touches and a game-high 11 marks.

From the coach[]

“We knew Carlton were going to come out and play like they did. They’re very good in the contest. Their pressure was elite and we struggled to stay in the game. Probably lucky we didn’t concede. We did at the start of the third. We didn’t handle their heat. But our backs did stand up, I think they kicked the first goal in 30 seconds (in the second half). We probably spent eight minutes defending and then it clicked a little bit. We won a few contests in front of the ball and we went into a pretty good space for probably half-an-hour and put the game out of reach. We’re a good side, but we’re no different to anyone else in terms of bringing intensity and playing four quarters – we’re still searching for that.

"It (the burst at the end of the third quarter) came from our leaders and our good players. We want to start like that but I thought Carlton played a really good system. They’re tough and hard to beat. Maybe they didn’t sustain it for four quarters and we found opportunities to rise when we needed to, but it’s probably happened for three or four weeks now where we’ve worked into the game and elevated at certain stages. I think our second halves in the last four or five weeks have been pretty good, but we haven’t had a four-quarter game, although that Collingwood game was pretty good.

“...We’ve missed Gov for the last three weeks but Harry Edwards last week and Josh Rotham building into a little bit of form and working as a system I thought they held up poorly at the start with some deep entries allowing some easy goals at the top of the square. But as the game went they worked into it just like the rest of our side. They’re playing a pretty good brand back there, but it was just a couple of easy goals in the first half. It’s top of the goalsquare contests that fall into someone’s hands, I don’t know how much of those are luck or good play from the Blues but we probably conceded one or two too many of those type of goals.”[2]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Carlton had kicked four in a row before West Coast answered it with a run of five of their own.

Four of them came in less than four minutes of playing time leading into three-quarter-time, as the Eagles again fell back on trump card Nic Naitanui and their centre-circle control to haul them out of trouble.

West Coast won the centre clearances 4-1 for the quarter and took full toll with quick goals out of the middle resulting to Jamie Cripps and Jack Darling.

There is nothing like quality entries and it was underlined as the Eagles created 17 scoring shots to 15, despite losing the inside-50 count 44-35."[3]

The Age[]

"The Blues gave themselves a chance to pinch an upset victory, bouncing back strongly after a disappointing loss against Hawthorn at the same venue a week earlier.

On the back of four goals from Zac Fisher and strong performances from Patrick Cripps and Marc Murphy, the Blues led by 19 points just after half-time.

But when the rain stopped, the home side stepped up a gear and dominated the third quarter to set up the 11.6 (72) to 7.8 (50) victory.

Two final-quarter goals from Dom Sheed sealed the result."[4]

West Coast and Carlton's reserves played a 12-a-side scrimmage ahead of the AFL clash.
