Ron Alexander was the inaugural coach of West Coast, but was surprisingly replaced after just one year in the job.
Playing career[]
A talented ruckman, Alexander began his career with East Perth, winning a flag with the Royals in 1972 and receiving their best and fairest award in 1974. He moved east to join Fitzroy in 1976 and played 133 games for the Lions, captaining the side for a couple of years and winning a best and fairest in 1981, his final year at the club. Alexander returned to WA in 1982 to take the role of captain-coach at East Fremantle, leading the Sharks to a flag in 1985.
Coaching career[]
Alexander retired as a player after the 1985 premiership but remained as Old Easts' coach, taking them to another grand final in 1986. When West Coast were formed, he was appointed as the coach for the inaugural season, leading the fledgling side to 11 wins. Despite that promising early showing he was replaced by John Todd.
Post-coaching career[]
Alexander has for many years been the director-general of the Department of Sport and Recreation.
