West Coast travelled to the western suburbs of Sydney to take on the Swans in a sudden-death final. After taking the points in a tight first quarter, the Eagles were overcome by a dominant Sydney in the second, giving up five goals and failing to score as a massive thunderstorm hit the ground. Lightning threatened to delay play, but elimination for West Coast was inevitable as they crashed to their lowest ever score in a final and their lowest against the Swans. The Eagles' last remaining premiership player Drew Banfield worked hard to keep his side in it, but had too few fellow contributors.

From the papers[]
The Sunday Age[]
"The Swans kicked clear to lead by five goals at half-time and the Eagles' forward line seemed totally dysfunctional.
Worsfold was forced to leave his premier player, Judd, in the forward line for much of the term in an effort to create something for his side, but the Eagles struggled.
Judd started forward again after the long break and his two goals early in the third term gave the visitors some hope.
The first of them came from a running snap that he made look easy; the second from a snap deep in the right forward pocket that brought the crowd to its feet.
The goal coincided with another patch of Eagles dominance, but for the second time in the match they were left almost empty-handed for their efforts."[1]
