From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"The first two goals of the match told the story of how each team felt, and ultimately, how the contest would unfold.

West Coast had four lively forwards - Heady, McIntosh, Lewis and Wilson - and each was able to break free and mark alone. It was like watching a basketball team setting up an open shot: the ball was worked easily and confidently around the forward line. Dean Kemp found Tony Evans and he goaled from 35 metres. Four minutes later, Peter Wilson shrugged a tackle from Wayne Schwass and goaled from 40 metres.

North Melbourne's disposal to Wayne Carey was high, hurried and hopeful. When the ball did arrive, Carey was besieged by Glen Jakovich and either Guy McKenna or Michael Brennan. North's response was to stand Brennan's opponent, Adrian McAdam, near the boundary line, 20-30 metres from his minder in the hope of dragging Brennan further away."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"West Coast's stout defence overshadowed North's free-flowing scoring game and was clearly the difference.

While defending impressively, the Eagles were able to push 14 points clear against a slight breeze by quarter-time before stretching that to 32 points at half-time.

North foght back in the third term but found goals hard to come by before the Eagles bagged six goals to three in the last period.

The Eagles also struggled in attack at times but its midfield and defence more than compensated."[2]
