West Coast revealed that exciting rookie Francis Watson was out indefinitely as he recovered from a "significant ankle sprain". Just days after making his debut midfielder Kurt Mutimer re-signed for a further two years, tying him to the club until the end of 2019. Mutimer said that he could not be happier at the club. West Coast named an unchanged lineup to face Port, but with a number of players facing fitness tests the club took three emergencies to Adelaide including makeshift ruckman Fraser McInnes, who was promoted from the rookie list in place of the injured Scott Lycett. Mark Hutchings and South Australian Malcolm Karpany also traveled with the team.

West Coast recorded a stirring win over Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, thanks to a stellar effort by the defensive unit.

North Melbourne had a big upset win over Adelaide, Carlton defeated Collingwood, Western Bulldogs narrowly beat Richmond and Gold Coast continued the boilover theme by defeating Geelong.

Sydney won for the first time in 2017 at the expense of Brisbane, Hawthorn pipped Melbourne in a thriller and Fremantle overcame Essendon.
