Promising defender Tom Cole was finally named to make his debut after weeks of being on the cusp of selection. Lewis Jetta, Xavier Ellis, Patrick McGinnity and Tom Barrass were named on an extended bench, while Andrew Gaff (concussion) and Elliot Yeo (quad strain) were omitted.
Meanwhile, Mitch Brown was removed from the long-term injured list after overcoming a finger injury, with Brant Colledge returning to the rookie list.

Untried youngster Matthew Allen signed a one-year extension to his draftee contract, tying him to the club until the end of 2018.

East Perth were thrashed by co-tenants Subiaco at Leederville, going down by 99 points.
Hawthorn defeated Brisbane, Port Adelaide beat Melbourne, St Kilda kept Fremantle winless, Adelaide defeated GWS Giants and Richmond beat Essendon in the annual "Dreamtime at the G" clash.

West Coast cruised to a big win over Gold Coast, running out 77-point winners on the back of five goals from Josh Kennedy and 26 possessions from Luke Shuey.
In other games, Carlton upset Geelong and Western Bulldogs beat Collingwood.

Midfielders Andrew Gaff and Elliot Yeo were both expected to be available to return to the side against the Bulldogs, subject to passing fitness tests. Jackson Nelson was also a chance to return to action after recovering from an elbow injury, with Xavier Ellis also facing a fitness test after hurting a wrist playing for East Perth. The only long-term injured player was the luckless Dom Sheed, who faced a further 3-4 weeks out after aggravating his knee while pushing himself to return from his pectoral injury.
