Jeremy McGovern and Scott Selwood returned to the side from injury, but promising youngster Dom Sheed was revealed to have suffered a finger fracture. Jackson Nelson was also left out, but traveled to Melbourne with the side as did the untried Tom Barrass.

Geelong thrashed Carlton, keeping the pressure on Blues coach Mick Malthouse.

Saturday 23 May[]

West Coast defeated St Kilda at Docklands to remain in second spot on the ladder.

GWS Giants beat Adelaide, Collingwood thrashed Gold Coast, Sydney squeaked home over Hawthorn in a Grand Final replay and Fremantle thumped North Melbourne.

Sunday 24 May[]

Essendon defeated Brisbane, Melbourne beat Western Bulldogs, and Richmond upset Port Adelaide.

Monday 25 May[]

The Match Review Panel offered Elliot Yeo a one-week suspension for an incident involving St Kilda's Jimmy Webster. Webster was forced from the field under the blood rule after a late spoiling attempt by Yeo in the second term. Yeo risked a two-week suspension if he chose to challenge.

Tuesday 26 May[]

Yeo accepted his suspension, ruling him out of the Geelong clash.

The weekly injury list confirmed that Sheed and Matt Rosa would also be unavailable for the game, with Jack Darling still two weeks away.
