West Coast named ruckman Nic Naitanui to play against Sydney, 19 months after wrecking his knee in his last match. Five potential debutants were named but only father-son product Jake Waterman was assured a debut, with Liam Ryan, Daniel Venables, Brayden Ainsworth and Francis Watson all on an extended bench.

Richmond beat Carlton in the official season opener.

Friday 23 March[]

Ryan and Venables were confirmed as joining Waterman in making their debuts, marking the first time since 1996 that the Eagles had debuted three players in the same match. Ainsworth and Watson were named emergencies along with Mark Hutchings and Fraser McInnes.

Essendon came from behind to defeat Adelaide.

Saturday 24 March[]

East Perth were thrashed by Peel Thunder in a practice match in Mandurah, losing by triple figures. Ainsworth and Josh Rotham were two of the Royals' better players.

St Kilda beat Brisbane, Port Adelaide easily accounted for Fremantle, Hawthorn defeated Collingwood and Gold Coast won a rain-soaked encounter with North Melbourne.

Sunday 25 March[]

West Coast fell to Sydney by 29 points in the first AFL match to be played at Perth Stadium. Naitanui made a strong comeback, albeit on limited minutes, and Jack Darling and Mark LeCras combined for six goals.

GWS Giants thrashed Western Bulldogs and Geelong narrowly defeated Melbourne.

The weekly injury list revealed that spearhead Josh Kennedy (ankle) was still three to four weeks away from appearing, while Nathan Vardy (adductor) and Brendon Ah Chee (ankle) were also about a month away as they returned from injury. Mercifully there were no new issues arising out of the weekend's games.
