West Coast revealed that Josh Kennedy had suffered a hairline fracture in his lower leg and would miss at least the Essendon match.
When the official team was announced, Will Schofield, Fraser McInnes and Mark Hutchings were recalled at the expense of Kennedy and the omitted Jarrod Brander and Dom Sheed.

West Coast fell to Essendon by 28 points at Perth Stadium, getting shell-shocked in the first quarter by a Bombers' onslaught before fighting their way back into the contest but squandering numerous chances. Elliot Yeo laid 12 tackles to go with 22 possessions and Jamie Cripps kicked two goals.
Earlier in the day, Daniel Venables was officially removed from the long-term injury list ahead of a WAFL comeback, with Tarir Bayok returning to the rookie list.

West Coast revealed that key talls Kennedy and Tom Barrass (back) would not be fit to return for the upcoming clash with Adelaide, remaining on the sidelines with Jack Darling (ankle). To add to the side's forward woes, Mark LeCras was also in doubt with a wrist injury suffered early against Essendon, although he was able to run out that match.
