Sam Butler returned to the side at the expense of Matt Rosa. Midfielder Mark Hutchings traveled with the team to Darwin as cover.

Friday 3 July[]

The footy world was shocked by news overnight that Crows senior coach and former West Coast assistant Phil Walsh had been killed overnight after neighbours had reported a domestic dispute. Walsh's 26 year old son was charged with the death of the 55 year old former Magpies, Tigers and Bears player. The upcoming game between Adelaide and Geelong was called off, with the sides to split the four points, while other games were confirmed as going ahead albeit in subdued circumstances.

Hawthorn beat Collingwood, with the players and coaches of both sides linking arms in the centre circle post-match to honour Walsh.

Saturday 4 July[]

West Coast defeated Melbourne in Darwin, in the club's first game in the Northern Territory for premiership points. Jack Darling kicked five goals in just his third game back from a lengthy layoff.

East Perth fell to Swan Districts by just four points at Bassendean.

Richmond overcame a gallant GWS Giants, Gold Coast had a big upset win over North Melbourne, and Western Bulldogs beat Carlton.

Sunday 5 July[]

St Kilda demolished a noncompetitive Essendon by 110 points, and Fremantle beat Brisbane in a rain-affected match.

Monday 6 July[]

John Worsfold announced he was taking on a newly-created role as coaching director of Adelaide, to help out interim coach Scott Camporeale in the wake of the Walsh tragedy.

Mark LeCras was offered a $1,000 fine by the match review panel for striking Demon Neville Jetta.

Tuesday 7 July[]

The club revealed that youngsters Alec Waterman and Damien Cavka were facing extended stints on the sidelines. Father-son product Waterman had been diagnosed with glandular fever after already missing a number of weeks, and Cavka had reported soreness in his troublesome foot after making his East Perth debut. In further bad news, Rosa and Scott Lycett faced fitness tests after suffering corks in the Royals' weekend action.

LeCras accepted his fine.
