West Coast named Liam Duggan to captain an extremely inexperienced squad in the inaugural AFLX tournament, with Jackson Nelson, Tom Cole and Malcolm Karpany the only other players with AFL experience. Top draft pick Jarrod Brander and livewire forward Willie Rioli were also among the inclusions.
