The horror injury run continued with news that Murray Newman would miss at least 8 weeks after damaging a finger tendon during his four-goal game with East Perth.

Top draft pick Liam Duggan was named to make his debut against Carlton. Will Schofield, Jamie Bennell and Simon Tunbridge were also recalled, with Scott Selwood (ankle) and Sam Butler (adductor) unavailable along with the out-for-the-year Mitch Brown, and Tom Lamb omitted.

West Coast defeated Carlton by 69 points after holding the Blues scoreless in the second quarter, with Josh Kennedy booting a 10-goal haul against his former club. Kennedy had six goals in the third term alone but the only downside from the match was a leg injury to Simon Tunbridge.

Western Bulldogs beat Richmond, GWS Giants came from behind to defeat Melbourne, Adelaide beat Collingwood, St Kilda upset Gold Coast and Sydney defeated Port Adelaide in Adelaide.

Fremantle defeated Geelong, Essendon upset Hawthorn in a thriller, and North Melbourne thrashed Brisbane.

The bad news continued on the injury front, with Simon Tunbridge out for 12 weeks with an ankle injury suffered against Carlton and Scott Selwood set to miss 4 to 6 weeks with a recurrence of his own ankle problem. Xavier Ellis was also listed as still a week or two away after previously appearing to have overcome his hamstring injury.
