Slightly-built midfielder David Bain was originally part of the inaugural Eagles squad, before being the last man cut from the final side. He went on to a successful AFL career with Brisbane and Fitzroy.
West Coast career[]
Bain played two seasons with the Royals before being part of West Coast's initial squad unveiling in October 1986. He was then the unlucky player to make way as the new club enticed Richmond midfielder John Annear to return to Perth ahead of the 1987 season.
Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy career[]
Putting that setback behind him, Bain turned in a superb season for the Royals in 1988 that saw him win the Sandover Medal, following which the Bears pounced on him in the national draft. Bain played 86 games for Brisbane and was a joint best-and-fairest winner in 1990, before being traded to Fitzroy at the end of 1993. Bain played just one season for the Lions, adding 12 games to his AFL tally.
Post-VFL/AFL career[]
Bain returned to Queensland to play for powerful local club Southport, where he immediately won the Grogan Medal, QAFL's best and fairest medal, in 1995. He skippered the Sharks to four consecutive premierships from 1997 to 2000, adding another Grogan Medal in 1999.
