Best remembered as the Docker who repeatedly punched on with Phil Read in the Demolition Derby of 2000, Dale Kickett was a football journeyman who passed through West Coast between stints at four other clubs.

Fitzroy career[]

Originally from Claremont by way of the Wheatbelt town of Tammin, Kickett was taken by Fitzroy with a top 10 pick in the 1989 national draft after winning the first of his three WAFL premierships with the Tigers. He played 15 games for the Lions in his rookie season, but struggled in Melbourne and was traded home at the end of the year.

West Coast career[]

Kickett, like so many other Eagles of that era, got very few chances in the strong West Coast side. He made his debut mid-season in a loss to Carlton and made just one further appearance, in a nailbiting loss to North Melbourne at the MCG. While West Coast stormed into the AFL grand final, Kickett led Claremont to the WAFL’s big stage and won the Simpson Medal as best on ground as the Tigers won another flag.

St Kilda and Essendon career[]

Kickett was delisted by West Coast at the end of the 1991 season and snapped up by St Kilda in the pre-season draft. He played 21 games and kicked 20 goals for the Saints in the 1992 season but still struggled to adjust to life in Melbourne and returned to Claremont at the end of the year. In 1993 he was drafted by Essendon in the mid-season draft but played out the year at Claremont where he won his second Simpson Medal and his third premiership medal. Kickett did make the move to Essendon for the 1994 season but played only 8 games.

Fremantle career[]

At the end of 1994 he was traded to Fremantle, where he finally settled and made his name as a tough, uncompromising defender. He played 135 games in the purple and won the club’s best and fairest in 1997. Kickett retired during the 2002 season.
