Victorian product Campbell Chesser was West Coast's first pick in the 2021 national draft.

West Coast career[]

Originally from Albury-Wodonga on the NSW-Victoria border, Chesser boarded at Melbourne Grammar and played underage football for the Sandringham Dragons. He captained Vic Country and was named an All-Australian at under-16 level, although his subsequent 2020 and 2021 seasons were ruined by Covid and injury. Chesser was drafted by West Coast in the first round of the 2021 draft, with the club trading back in the draft order in the knowledge he would still be available. On being drafted, he was described as an attacking defender with great athleticism and the versatility to move into the midfield.[1]

Unfortunately Chesser's debut season was over before it began, with an ankle injury suffered during a pre-season clash with Fremantle requiring surgeny and seeing him placed on the inactive list ahead of round 1. He returned for 2022 and, despite being eased through the pre-season, earned a debut in Round 1. He was one of the many players to get injured in the round 3 derby, but returned from that knee injury later in the season and finished with 14 games. Chesser played another 18 games in 2024, generally on the wing, but suffered from low production and was dropped late in the year.
