A medium-sized defender with a terrific kick but below-average pace, Blayne Wilson took two and a half years to get a senior debut.
West Coast career[]
An All-Australian as an under-18, Wilson was surprisingly overlooked in the 2010 national draft. West Coast pounced on him in the pre-season draft, having delisted premiership forward Ashley Hansen to create a list spot.
Wilson battled injuries over the next two years at Peel Thunder, including an ankle injury that kept him out of the second half of 2012. When Peel became aligned to Fremantle in 2013 he switched to East Perth, which brought a change in fortune. Wilson earned a call-up against St Kilda in Melbourne and impressed with 21 touches and 10 marks. He was dropped back to the Royals after his second game, but was recalled for five games late in the season.
Wilson added just two more games in 2014. He spent the year with the Royals where he performed reasonably, but was required only twice, coming into the side in Brisbane as a late replacement for Brad Sheppard and for the final game of the year. He was delisted at the end of the year, finishing with just nine games in four years.
Post-AFL career[]
Wilson trained with Sydney ahead of the 2015 rookie draft but was not picked up. He then signed with South Fremantle, where his father Dean Wilson played a number of games, for the 2015 WAFL season.[1] Wilson played in Souths' 2020 premiership alongside fellow former Eagle Dylan Main, before retiring from WAFL football at the end of 2021.
