A WAFL veteran when he was drafted, Ashton Hams dominated through the midfield for South Fremantle but was used as a defensive small forward at AFL level over four seasons.

West Coast career[]

Hams was a relatively old rookie, drafted at 23 years of age after winning a Simpson Medal as best on ground in South Fremantle's 2009 grand final win.

He was elevated from the rookie list early in 2010 and made his debut against Essendon at Subiaco. He ended up playing 11 games and kicking 10 goals, with his best performance coming in the return fixture against the Bombers when he kicked 3 goals from 18 touches (although his effort was slightly overshadowed by Mark LeCras' 12 goal haul).

Hams struggled for selection in 2011, managing just 4 games. Despite that, he was promoted to the senior list for 2012 and had the best season of his AFL career, playing 16 games and kicking bags of 3 goals three times, including in back to back games against Adelaide and Brisbane.

His good form may have been helped by the fact fellow small forward LeCras missed the season through injury. In 2013 Hams only played eight games, most of them while LeCras was unavailable. At the end of the season he announced his retirement at just 27, probably recognizing his time at the top level was limited.

Post-AFL career[]

Hams returned to South Fremantle, representing WA three times from 2014 to 2016. He retired at the end of 2018 after 205 games for the Bulldogs, joining amateur side Wesley-Curtin.[1] Hams then turned out for Tiwi Bombers in the Northern Territory,[2] and Cairns City Lions in Queensland[3]
