Originally from South Belgrave, about 40kms south-east of Melbourne, Williams was picked up at selection 34 in the 1997 national draft, which West Coast had received from Melbourne in a trade for the uncapped Craig Smoker.

West Coast career[]

Playing primarily off a half-forward flank or on a wing, Williams made his debut late in the 1998 season and ended up playing 5 games. The following season he managed 22 games including the qualifying final and semi-final, and kicked 11 goals including a career-high bag of 4 early in the year against Collingwood.

From that point on he was something of a regular fixture in the senior team, although he struggled at times to have a significant impact on games. Williams played every game in the forgettable 2001 campaign and managed 18 games for 19 goals, his best season’s return, the following year.

At the end of that season he headed home to Victoria, switching to Collingwood in a straight swap for Chipper Adkins.

Collingwood career[]

Williams had an impressive first year at the Pies, playing 22 games including a qualifying final, but managed only 10 more across the next two seasons before being delisted at the end of 2005.

Post-AFL career[]

Proving he was always more comfortable in the blue and gold, after he was delisted by Collingwood, Williams played a couple of seasons for the Wiliamstown Seagulls in the VFL before shifting to the Beaconsfield Eagles in the Mornington Peninsula-Nepean Football League in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
