The knock on McDougall was always that he had the size and the talent to be a player, but not the desire.

West Coast career[]

Taken with pick 5 in the national draft, McDougall had to wait almost two full years to make his AFL debut. After 15 goals in three weeks with the Demons, he was picked for the final round match against North Melbourne and held his spot for the elimination final against Essendon the following week.

McDougall started 2003 in the WAFL, but made his way into the seniors mid-season and showed a glimpse of his potential with four goals against Melbourne in August. He played 10 games for the year but unfortunately a broken jaw ruled him out of the first (and only) final against Adelaide.

The laconic key forward had what appeared to be a breakout year in 2004, playing 21 games and kicking 35 goals to finish behind only Phil Matera in the club’s goalkicking. McDougall equalled his career high of four goals against Brisbane and for a while appeared to be the team’s great white hope at centre-half-forward.

It wasn’t to be, with injuries and a lack of passion limiting him to just five games in the next two years. After managing a solitary game in the team’s premiership season, West Coast was somehow able to convince the Western Bulldogs, perennially in need of a key forward, to part with a fourth-round pick for McDougall. The Dogs even threw in an upgrade in the second round, which was used to nab tall defender Eric MacKenzie.

Western Bulldogs career[]

McDougall managed just five senior games for the Bulldogs in 2007 and none in all at 2008. He announced his retirement from AFL football in July of that year, shortly after his 25th birthday.

Post-AFL career[]

McDougall returned to Perth for the 2010 WAFL season, and in 2013 switched to Subiaco.
