West Coast stunned finals hopefuls Essendon to record a morale-boosting win. With Windy Hill living up to its name, the Eagles took advantage of the strong breeze in the first term to kick two early goals and held the home side goalless for three terms. With the wind at their backs in the last, the Bombers threatened to come from 18 points down to take the points but West Coast's defenders were able to hold them off.
