West Coast looked to be suffering from a premiership hangover early in the season when it sat in the lower reaches of the ladder with a 3-3 record following a heavy defeat to Geelong, but the club rebounded to win 11 of the next 13 games, grabbing a handhold on a crucial top-two spot. However, a narrow loss to premiership favourites (and eventual champions) Richmond in the penultimate round was followed by an upset home defeat to Hawthorn, and the Eagles were forced to fight for the flag from the bottom half of the top eight, with the premiership defence ending in the second week of the finals with a semi-final loss to Geelong.
Several Eagles maintained or improved their form from the successful 2018 premiership campaign, with defenders Shannon Hurn and Jeremy McGovern joined by reigning club champion Elliot Yeo and first-timer Jack Darling in the All-Australian side and Luke Shuey, Brad Sheppard and Andrew Gaff appearing in the extended squad. Shuey pipped Yeo to win the John Worsfold Medal, denying the former Lion a third-straight win, and Sheppard earned his first career podium finish. The Eagles were also well-served by several youngsters including forwards Oscar Allen, Jack Petruccelle and Jake Waterman, while second-year forward Liam Ryan, who finished in the top ten of the best and fairest, took home Mark of the Year for a towering grab over Melbourne giant Max Gawn. West Coast was relatively lucky on the injury front, although premiership-winning youngster Daniel Venables missed the second half of the season with the effects of concussion and talismanic ruckman Nic Naitanui's comeback from a second knee reconstruction lasted just three games before he succumbed to an ankle injury, returning only for the finals.
