2016-17 offseason

West Coast sprung a huge surprise in the aftermath of the 2016 season by targeting Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell. After acquiring Mitchell on the cheap, they picked up Geelong's Nathan Vardy to provide ruck cover following the expected loss of Nic Naitanui for much of 2017, later adding further depth in the position by casting a lifeline to North Melbourne veteran Drew Petrie in the rookie draft. The club's first pick in the national draft was Victorian midfielder Daniel Venables.

On the other side of the ledger, the biggest losses were defenders Xavier Ellis to retirement and Mitch Brown, who was released to allow him to find a new home back in Victoria, although that ultimately turned out to be an amateur club.
