West Coast's premiership defence began terribly when former captain Ben Cousins suspended indefinitely during the pre-season for missing training sessions, and subsequently admitting to substance abuse problems. With Cousins in California for rehab, the Eagles nevertheless won their first six games to be sitting clear at the top of the ladder, before a poor run in the middle of the season. Despite Cousins' return in July, West Coast's run into the finals was hampered by a run of injuries, with Daniel Kerr, Andrew Embley and Chad Fletcher all missing games and captain Chris Judd severely hindered by a groin injury.

West Coast finished third to earn the double chance, but suffered the rare ignominy of being knocked out in straight sets. They did not go down without a fight however; a tight loss against Port Adelaide, with Cousins limping off with a torn hammy in what turned out to be his last game as an Eagle, was followed by an extra-time defeat at Subiaco at the hands of Collingwood with star trio Cousins, Judd and Kerr all missing.

All-Australian full-back Darren Glass won his first Club Champion award, with defensive partner Adam Hunter also having a strong season and proving extremely valuable in regular swings into the forward line. On the youth front, Matt Priddis showed the first signs of the clearance machine he would become, while Matt Rosa, Mark LeCras and Shannon Hurn all gave glimpses of the future.
