After the previous year's surprise return to the finals, West Coast were looking to build on that momentum. Despite losing star veteran Peter Matera to retirement before the season began, the clubstarted 2003 strongly, winning seven of the first nine games. Entering August the team was looking set for a top-4 finish and a double chance, but then lost three and drew one of the final five matches to fall to 7th spot. Forced to travel to Adelaide for a sudden-death final against the Crows, the Eagles were blown away and bowed out of the finals in the first week for the second straight year.

Captain Ben Cousins again led from the front, winning his third consecutive Club Champion award after a stellar year in which he finished just one vote behind joint Brownlow winners Adam Goodes, Nathan Buckley and Mark Ricciuto. Cousins was surprisingly overlooked when the All-Australian team was chosen, but both ruckman Michael Gardiner and goalsneak Phil Matera were selected for the first time in their respective careers. Second-year midfielder Chris Judd continued to impress, finishing second behind Cousins in the best and fairest and forming a dynamic centre square combination with Cousins and Daniel Kerr. Another second-year player, Ashley Sampi won the Rookie of the Year award after kicking 31 goals as a foil for Phil Matera, with his efforts including a cool-as-a-cucumber set shot against the Bulldogs to level the scores after the siren and salvage a draw.
