After West Coast missed the finals for the first time in a decade and the mass exodus of the 1992 and 1994 premiership players continued, the club looked to bring in a large number of experienced players to fill the void. For the most part, the move was not a success. At the draft, while top-5 pick Andrew McDougall was ultimately a disappointment, West Coast staged a coup by picking up Daniel Kerr with a second-round pick.
