Fresh off their impressive finals run in 1990, West Coast set all sorts of records during the regular season, winning the first twelve matches and spending the entire season on top of the ladder. The Eagles lost just three home-and-away matches - a pair of 3-point losses in Melbourne and then a surprise final-round loss to lowly Fitzroy. West Coast earned the right to host the first-ever final played outside of Melbourne, but were beaten by a much more experiences Hawks side. After that hiccup, the Eagles were forced onto the road for the rest of the finals series, defeating Melbourne easily and then Geelong in a tight tussle to book an historic first Grand Final appearance. Unfortunately, once again Hawthorn proved too experienced and too strong, winning by 9 goals to end West Coast's dream of a fairytale.

Craig Turley had a stunning year, the fan favourite winning the Club Champion award and finishing second in the Brownlow Medal. He earned selection in the All-Australian team, and was joined by three teammates - Peter Matera and Chris Mainwaring picked on the wings and Guy McKenna in the backline. Up forward, Peter Sumich kicked a club record 111 goals, the most-ever by a left footer and still the most goals ever kicked by an Eagle in a single season, although he was beaten to the Coleman Medal by giant Saint Tony Lockett. Some highly talented youngsters emerged onto the scene, in particular key defenders Glen Jakovich and Ashley McIntosh who both played big parts in their first seasons.
