West Coast were active in the off-season, bringing in a quartet of players through trades and sending a trio of players - Geoff Miles, Stevan Jackson and Todd Breman - who were struggling for opportunities to Victorian clubs. Among the new arrivals was Paul Harding, who had originally tried to join the club in its inaugural season but was blocked by Hawthorn and the Victorian Supreme Court. Harding would go on to play in the side's first flag.
Draft-wise, the Eagles added future premiership forward Jason Ball as a pre-draft selection and 100-gamer Daniel Metropolis with its first pick. The rest of the arrivals had little success at West Coast but a few went on to bigger and better things at other clubs, including surprise selection, Essendon veteran Tim Watson, who was picked in the pre-season draft despite having announced his retirement.
