With a handful of the veteran players in the inaugural squad either retiring or being cut, West Coast added a number of young WAFL players to take their place. Of those youngsters, Guy McKenna would go on to captain the club and make the AFL Hall of Fame while Chris Waterman and Karl Langdon also had very solid careers. Incoming coach John Todd added a number of his Swan Districts charges to the side, as well as former Swan Murray Rance, who was the club's sole signing from a VFL rival after returning home from Footscray.
